The High Field MR Center, Vienna, has developed an educational program for the qualification as an MR Safety Officer. The course received ÖNORM certification by the Austrian Standards Institute in 2009, making this the first MR safety course worldwide to be accredited by a standards agency.
Background
The overall responsibility for MR safety lies with the facility operator, which must ensure that people who are appointed as MR Safety Officers have the competence and authority to perform this task effectively. There must be at least one MR safety officer for each MR site (which may encorporate a number of MRI scanners). (ÖNORM S 1125-1, 2009)
Course Aim
The expertise acquired in the ÖNORM-certified MR safety officer program qualifies a person to assess and to manage hazards associated with magnetic devices in medical diagnostics and, in accordance with the role assigned to them by the site operator, to assume responsibility for the monitoring of risk protection measures. (ÖNORM S 1125-1, 2009)
Time Frame
The course consists of 20 lessons of 45 min, including 6 practical sessions and a final multiple choice exam. The course is held on two consecutive days.
Target Group
This course is primarily aimed at persons who have been appointed, or are going to be appointed, as being responsible for the safety of the plant by the operator of an MR location and who are qualified for this task. These are usually experienced radiologists, radiographers (radiology technologists), engineers and physicists from research or industrial facilities. In principle, anyone who wishes to improve their skills in the field of MR safety is welcome.
