Stefan Zbyn

 

Stefan Zbyn (born 24th June 1981) graduated from Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia in June 2005 where he obtained MSc degree in Biomedical Physics with a master thesis on dynamic phosphorus MR spectroscopy of brain. He joined the High Field MR Center at the Medical University of Vienna in July 2005.

 

PhD thesis:

Stefan defended his PhD thesis entitled “Evaluation of Cartilage Repair Tissue in the Knee and Ankle Joint using Sodium Magnetic Resonance Imaging at 7 Tesla” at Medical university of Vienna, Austria in February 2016 (Supervisor: Prof. Siegfried Trattnig). His work at High Field MR Center was mainly focused on the optimization and postprocessing of sodium MR imaging for the compositional evaluation of cartilage repair tissue in the knee and ankle joint at 7 Tesla. He used his expertise to support other sodium MR imaging projects, such as evaluation of Achilles tendon degeneration, kidney function and breast lesions. Although Stefan was also involved in proton and phosphorus MR spectroscopy studies on patients with prostate cancer and diabetes mellitus, his main focus was on projects employing quantitative MR imaging techniques for the evaluation of cartilage and other musculoskeletal tissues (tendons, menisci).   

 

Career:

After receiving his PhD at Medical University in Vienna, Stefan joined the group Prof. Miika Nieminen at University of Oulu in June 2016, where he was working on the development of novel MR parameters and rapid T1rho dispersion measurements techniques for the evaluation of cartilage molecular composition at 3 Tesla. In July 2018, Stefan became a research associate at the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research, University of Minnesota, in the group of Prof. Jutta Ellermann. His current research focuses on the development of rapid quantitative MR imaging techniques for the comprehensive imaging of knee cartilage development in children and in animal models at clinical and ultra-high filed MR systems.
